"Girl in Space" Costume

University Theatre Design Project

The project concept was deceptively easy: one actor on stage in a one act play. One costume. Simple enough. What started as simple turned into a several month long exploration of character, materials, and collaboration with the designers working on the other aspects of the show.

This show was the first of it's kind at NC State: it was written, designed, constructed, and performed entirely by students. We, the designers, had faculty advisers, but all of the final decisions came down to us.

Our character was Lana, the lone female astronaut who works as an engineer aboard a ship with five male crew members on a ten year mission. She's energetic, rebellious, intelligent, a bit lazy and introverted, and, above all else, she will do anything for coffee.

I wanted the costume to reflect this, so I put her in some "regulation" space pajamas, made from flannel because, of course, space is freezing cold, with a "contraband" coffee t-shirt and fluffy fox slippers. A lot of careful detail work went into the coat and pants, so I constructed them almost entirely on my own. Overall, it was an extremely rewarding experience.
